(1st prize $1500, 2nd prize $500, plus four consolation prizes
consisting of every bit of merchandise we ever made)
This is a worldwide competition, (not that we are expecting many entries from Alabama, Argentina or Albania)... to make some kind of gloriously inspired pastiche / dramatic tableau / MTV style clip / post-modern pisstake / foolish girlie mime session / stop motion plasticine fiesta / choreographed dog opera / underwater macrame display to the musical accompaniment of a Spooky Men’s Chorale song. We are very excited to see what might be come from your fevered imaginations and what our songs might inspire in you. So borrow your housemates digital camera, dust off all those beautiful and demented ideas you never got to use at art school and get to work...
HERE ARE THE RULES:
1. Create a clip to act as visual accompaniment to any Spooky Men’s Chorale song from the first two albums, using any visual media you like. The clip must be your own work and not involve the infringing of anyone else’s copyright or artistic property.
2. Post it to YouTube.
3. Send an email to competition@spookymen.com.au telling us that you have entered and where we can find your clip. This email will be acknowledged, signifying that you are officially in the running.
4. The closing date is MIDNIGHT on SUNDAY 31 MAY 2009. After this there will be a week where the videos can be viewed and voted upon by the general spooky public. Whoever receives the most votes will be deemed to have won the People’s Choice Prize.
5. The prizes will be announced at the conclusion of that week, ie on MONDAY 8 JUNE 2009
6. The Spooky Men will be the only and final arbiters of who wins the prizes in this thing. Unless we suspect that there has been some kind of vote rigging, we’ll give one of the two cash prizes to the winner of the People’s Choice Prize. No dispute will be entered into about any of this, unless it’s very witty and sung by a chorus of some kind.
7. Unless notified otherwise, and subject to negotiations about terms and conditions of use, we would like to include one one or more of these clips in the Spooky DVD/EP which is planned for release later this year.
8. The prizes refered to are in Australian dollars. the GRAND PRIZE is $1500, and the second prize $500. the merchandise packs will include three CDs (including the new release with Fred Smith), a tshirt, tea towel, coaster, teenage poster, ...as well as a signed (by everybody) copy of an art print of the spooky “Stop Scratching It” cover shot (actually we’ve yet to organise that, but I reckon it’s going to happen...)
9. Close friends and relatives of the Spooky Men are not prohibited from entering. However they may wish to travel incognito for this competition so as to avoid any appearance of nepotism. If they don’t know what incognito is they should ask their spooky friend and thus blow their cover.
10. You need to know that should you choose a song which is not a spooky original or a traditional song that officially you need permission from the copyright holder (usually the music publisher). Obviously there are many videos on the web that do not comply with this, and in reality the likely worst that could conceivably happen is that the video would eventually need to be removed, but we must state that this is your responsibility as the video maker.
11. The harming of any live mastodons or ill treatment of their carcasses is strictly prohibited.
12. Bribes will be generally frowned upon unless they are greater in cash value to THE GRAND PRIZE.
